The Gin RoomThe Gin Room

October 5, 2018by cheree6

I am now taking you from the dingiest room of the house (bathroom) to our favourite hangout spot, the sunroom.  Or as we lovingly refer to it as “The Gin Room”.  Although no one drinks gin in this house, we certainly have had our fair share of wine in here!  This room really is the perfect place for a 4 pm tipple with friends & family.  Since we are perched up high in the sky we get picture-perfect views of the sea and the street.

Plus the room gets all day sun which means for most of the year this is the room I run to when I want to feel some warmth in my blood.  In fact, we often have the opposite problem where guests are putting on their sunnies or stripping off layers because they are getting nailed by the sun!

Here are some old shots of the Gin room when I first moved in 3 years ago.  We inherited some very old rickety cane furniture from our landlord.  As you can see I am already trying to stamp my mark with a French Louis Chair

The setting sun in the Gin room….arrhhhhh

We are slowly improving this room with a recent sofa purchase from Danske Mobler.  The Chesterfield is currently on sale for $1275 – what a bargain!

There are now new cushions, a Ficus tree, and an old country stool which acts as a very low lying coffee table.

I am just about jumping out of my skin to get in and do some justice to this beautiful space.  It all just feels a bit grey and to be honest a bit blooming boring!  The reason why I have to put the handbrake on starting this room is 1. Paul is completely tied up doing our bathroom, and 2. we need to get our new roof put on before painting and putting new hardwood floors in.    So in the meantime, it is giving me plenty of time to think and plan to get this Gin room really singing.

Here are my ideas so far:

New Lighting on the back wall:

We are going to put shiplap on the back wall or as we say in New Zealand weatherboards.

Oak flooring that I am in love with but might have to sell a few more candles to pay for it all.

A new rug.

We are going to take out the sliding doors that separate this room from the dining room.  This will give us a bigger floor area to put some stylish coffee tables on each side of the sofa.

Maybe a new planter pot for Mr Ficus?

To add a bit of texture, I would like to add some Pom-pom curtains,  but I might have to twist Paul’s rubber arm for this purchase as he is not a huge fan yet?

And Viola just like that, one complete room!

You both are doing a great job and the house will look amazing when you have finished it. I love the views you have from the ‘gin room’ xx

You could buy sheers and sew pompoms on to one so Paul can see what it will look like in your room first!
The gin room will be lovely once it’s completed.

Marilyn what a stellar idea! Get the sheers up and then sneak those pompoms on while no one is looking – he, hee 🙂
