The Outside TourOur very first Veggie Garden

November 30, 2020by cheree4

We are only one day away from officially calling it Summer. I can’t wait to rip off my black wool tights and air these blue legs! Paul isn’t waiting around for the temperature to improve. He has already thrown off his toolbelt and jumped outside. Our focus over the next three months is to improve the curb appeal of this house. The first task is to remove the mound of dirt and rubbish that has been sitting there since pre-dawn. Apologies, to any of my neighbours that might be reading this blog post. In place of the mound, we are going to utilise this patch to put in our very first vegetable garden.

In case you are wondering how this might look from the street, we are going to cover the surrounding vegetable garden with hedging. Paul has drawn up a conceptual diagram which can explain our direction better.

To contain the garden, Paul has built a brick wall. He will render and paint this wall later with Alabaster, Resene White like our house. I didn’t want the Greek island look, so we have decided after a bit of debate (there is more work involved) to cap the wall with concrete tiles to achieve this look.

It’s hard to concentrate on the fence when the house looks this beautiful! Source:

The plan is to cover the retaining wall with beautiful hydrangeas right down to our new letterbox.

Instead of making several rough-sawn wooden boxes, which I feel don’t work with the overall design, Paul is going to create two large wooden boxes with Hardiegroove and paint it white. Possibly, put in a sundial or a seating area if there is room.

We are aiming to finish this project by the end of February. My hope is that by next Christmas we will be serving up a side salad to all our lunch guests. Can you believe there are only 25 days until Christmas 2020? Are you ready for the holidays? We certainly are….
